In a recent episode of the Grupo STT podcast, we had the honor of interviewing Jenny Alvarez, Human Resources Coordinator for South America, Panama, Mexico, and the Caribbean. During the conversation, Jenny shared her vision and experience on how diversity and inclusion can positively transform the work environment and generate tangible and intangible benefits for companies.
Workplace diversity refers to the presence of differences among employees in an organization. These differences can include race, gender, age, sexual orientation, disability, religion, and cultural background, among others. Inclusion, on the other hand, is the practice of creating an environment where these differences are valued and respected, allowing each person to fully contribute and feel valued.
Benefits of Diversity and Inclusion
- Innovation and Creativity: The diversity of perspectives and experiences generates more varied and dynamic ideas, driving creativity and innovation within the organization.
- Attraction and Retention of Talent: An inclusive environment that respects and values the individuality of employees tends to have a lower turnover rate. This increases employees’ sense of belonging and commitment, resulting in greater job satisfaction and productivity.
- Legal Compliance and Risk Reduction: Promoting a culture of diversity and inclusion helps comply with legal regulations on equal opportunities, reducing the risk of litigation and conflicts related to discrimination.
- Increase in Customer Satisfaction: A diverse workforce better reflects the diversity of the customer base, leading to a better understanding of their needs and ultimately to greater customer satisfaction.
- Promotion of a Learning Culture: Diversity and inclusion promote a culture of continuous learning, where personal and professional improvement and development are actively sought and valued.
Grupo STT Initiatives
At Grupo STT, the culture of diversity and inclusion has been organically developed from the beginning. Jenny shared some of the company’s most notable initiatives:
- Code of Ethics and Conduct: Grupo STT has a code that generally addresses diversity and inclusion and policies to prevent and sanction discrimination in the workplace.
- Internal Communication Campaigns: Campaigns based on generational diversity are carried out, highlighting the contributions and challenges faced by different age groups.
- Training in Assertive Communication and Workplace Empathy: These trainings strengthen the inclusive and respectful approach in the workplace.
- Gender Equality in Leadership: A notable achievement is that 70% of the leaders at Grupo STT are women, covering the management of subsidiaries and the coordination of areas at the regional level.
First Steps to Implement Diversity and Inclusion
- Develop a Clear Diversity and Inclusion Policy: Establish clear commitments to diversity and inclusion, with well-defined definitions and daily practices.
- Continuous Training: Offer regular training on diversity, inclusion, and unconscious bias to increase awareness and foster an environment of respect.
- Promote Diverse Representation in Recruitment: Ensure inclusive selection processes and eliminate biases in interviews and job descriptions.
- Create Spaces for Open Dialogue: Establish forums or discussion groups where employees can share their experiences and perspectives.
The Role of Leaders
Leaders play a crucial role in promoting diversity and inclusion within an organization. Their influence and behavior set the tone and culture of the company. Some actions they can take include:
- Modeling Behavior: Be examples of inclusive conduct and respect for diversity.
- Establishing Vision and Commitment: Articulate a clear vision of the importance of diversity and inclusion and reflect this commitment in policies and strategic decisions.
- Promoting Inclusive Policies and Practices: Implement and support policies that promote inclusion, such as equitable hiring practices and mentorship programs.
- Facilitating Education and Awareness: Promote training programs on diversity and inclusion.
- Supporting the Development of Diverse Talent: Ensure that all employees have equitable opportunities for career advancement.
- Creating a Safe Environment: Foster a work environment where everyone feels safe to express their identities and opinions.
- Encouraging Feedback: Encourage employees to provide feedback on the inclusion culture and act on it to continuously improve.
Diversity and inclusion are fundamental pillars for building a fair, innovative, and productive work environment. At Grupo STT, these values are deeply integrated into the organizational culture, reflecting a genuine commitment to respecting and valuing all people. As Jenny Alvarez reminded us, by fostering diversity and inclusion, we not only fulfill our ethical and legal responsibilities but also position ourselves for sustainable success in a competitive and changing world.
